RAM Speed vs Timings: Which Actually Matters More for Gaming?

A 6000MHz CL36 kit and a 6000MHz CL30 kit have the same speed rating but noticeably different real-world latency. Here is what CAS latency actually measures and when it is worth paying for.

RAM kits are marketed almost entirely on one number — the MHz speed rating — while the second number on the box, the CAS latency (the “CL” in “CL30”), gets treated as an afterthought. For gaming specifically, that ordering is backwards more often than not.

What the numbers on the box mean

“DDR5-6000 CL30” describes two separate things. 6000 is the data transfer rate in mega-transfers per second — roughly, how often the memory can send a burst of data. CL30 is the CAS latency: the number of memory clock cycles between a request being made and the first bit of data being ready. A lower CL number is faster, not slower — it means fewer cycles of waiting.

Why the two numbers don’t tell the same story

Frequency and latency pull in opposite directions as engineering trade-offs. Pushing frequency higher generally means loosening timings to keep the chips stable, which is why a 6000MHz CL36 kit and a 6000MHz CL30 kit both exist at the same price tier from different manufacturers — they represent different points on that trade-off, not simply “better” and “worse” silicon.

The number that actually predicts real-world latency is neither figure in isolation — it’s CL divided by frequency, doubled, which gives you the actual delay in nanoseconds. A 6000MT/s CL30 kit works out to 10ns of first-word latency. A 6000MT/s CL36 kit works out to 12ns — 20% slower to first data, despite an identical speed rating on the box.

Where this actually shows up in games

Memory latency disproportionately affects frame time consistency and 1% lows rather than average frame rate — the stutters and dips, not the headline benchmark number. It matters most in CPU-bound scenarios: competitive shooters at lower resolutions, simulation and strategy games with heavy AI or physics calculations, and any game that leans on single-thread performance. At 4K with a GPU-bound workload, the gap between a well-tuned and a loosely-timed kit at the same frequency shrinks close to nothing, because the GPU is the bottleneck, not memory latency.

Why AM5 platforms specifically care about the 6000MT/s number

On AMD’s AM5 platform, memory speed and the Infinity Fabric interconnect that links the CPU cores to memory are tied together at a 1:1 ratio up to roughly DDR5-6000. Above that speed, many boards and CPUs have to drop to a 1:2 ratio to stay stable, which adds a latency penalty that generally outweighs the benefit of the higher frequency. That’s why 6000MT/s specifically — not 6400 or 7200 — is the commonly recommended sweet spot for Ryzen builds, and why chasing a higher frequency number past that point can quietly make performance worse rather than better.

The practical takeaway

For a gaming build, a tighter-timing kit at a moderate, platform-appropriate frequency (6000MT/s on current AM5 boards) beats a looser-timing kit at a higher advertised frequency more often than the marketing suggests. If two kits are priced closely, check the CL number, not just the MHz figure — and don’t assume a higher frequency kit is automatically the faster one.
